The exact etymological history of the musical sense of high and low pitch is still unclear. But in real elections, all other things are never really equal.

With these results in mind, we plan on designing experiments to test whether the preference for leaders with lower-pitched voices is stronger when the candidate speaks about foreign rather than domestic policy.

Absolute pitch

Pitch is an auditory sensation in which a listener assigns musical tones to relative positions on a musical scale based primarily on their perception of the frequency of vibration. Pitch is closely related to frequency, but the two are not equivalent.

The ability of humans to perceive pitch is associated with the frequency of the sound wave that impinges upon the ear. Because sound waves traveling through air are longitudinal waves that produce high- and low-pressure disturbances of the particles of the air at a given frequency, the ear has an ability to detect such frequencies and associate them with the pitch of the sound.

Research shows that 2 to 5 percent of the U.S. population has problems with pitch perception. Studies in twins also indicates that the role of inheritance in deficits in pitch recognition is extremely high, with little effect of environmental experience.

The timing theory of pitch perception proposes that pitch is determined by the timing of neural impulses in the auditory nerve.

As phase locking breaks down for frequencies above 4 kHz, pitch perception based on timing information is only possible for low-frequency sounds. Most pitchers who brag about their rise ball don't really have one.

The majority of pitchers don't put the correct bottom-to-top spin on the ball, or don't have enough spin speed, or lack pitch speed.

Just because a pitcher releases the ball low and throws it high on the batter doesn't mean it is a rise ball.
